Ok, lets get this party going. I am a recent R2R owner that discovered how great this format can be. As a child my Dad had a Panasonic R2R that we would tape ourselves on then play it back. It was fun as a kid though the Dad didn't like to leave us playing with it much;)

Anyway, a few months back I was able to pick up a Teac 4010S. I picked up some prerecorded tape and was blown away by the sound. I have made a few tapes and really do enjoy the ability to play Almost 1 1/2 hours of nonstop music.

Here she be :D
I am working on better photos BTW

So, anyone us an R2R?

The sounds is real nice. It sounds like vinyl with the added benefit of long play time. The A4010S has auto reverse, so lots of long play.

Thank you sir. I do enjoy playing with it. I had a christmas get-together with some employees. They are 20 somethings mostly. I took them up to the listening room and they were floored. One had never seen a record player or record. He also was shocked to hear music playing from the Teac. He said he was going to ask why I had that old computer hooked up to my amp.

I don't have any but a friend of mine has two Akai reel to reels, also a Kenwood KR-5030, and a Sansui, i think Model Six, if not one identical to that, and a top of the line Dual Turntable along with a few other turntables including a Pioneer...

Some photos of my pride and joy.

Purchased non-working. Pinch roller frozen due to dried up lubricant. Elected to disassemble rather than just soak down with solvents. Two hour job. Fixed.

Next was burned out indicators. Elected to mod to LED's. A whole 'nother story there! Fixed.

Next was home-brew remote control. Photo attached. Do not like how this turned out. Wrong graphics (should be Ampex style arrows and symbols) and console too big and clunkly. Not shown is the cool, illuminated (via LED) backlit buttons. Not shown because it is all there except the correct LED's!!!! The ones I bought (1,100mcd) are too large to fit the game style push buttons. I did design a cool relay logic circuit to ensure the "STOP" button was illuminated - a function Otari never thought of in any of the remotes for this unit.

Next is scatchy controls. Still in process.

See Photobucket stuff:

I just happened upon this site by accident and I gotta say it's a wealth of info - I'm totally diggin this. So this happens to be my first post here. I'm a member of a few other audio forums, and I love audio. It's my life actually, as my business deals with audio, video, and everything in between. I hope to contribute much here, and I begin with this reel to reel thread.

I own a few reel to reels, and I've owned quite a few in my days. Currently my fav's are my Technics sibling's - a Technics RS-1506 and a RS-1520. These have been completely restored by me and they sound fantastic. I also have a spare parts RS-1520 because this particular model is a rare guy. There are many 1506's, and 1700's, but the 1520 is probably about as rare as they come. I've never seen one on eBay, nor in all my years of collecting audio gear. They are in super excellent cosmetic condition and in the same working and performing condition. They are just plain beautiful decks to hear and to see. These decks reside in our gameroom.

I also have an AKAI GX-747. This is the deck Darth Vador would own. Beautiful all black and in mint condition. The sound is superb, probably a notch better than the Technics. Bass extends as low as you need and the highs are farther than you could care for. Everything else in between is done just righ also. This is a machine that does faithful reproductions from CD's. I use this deck in my main 2 channel system.

In our bedroom I have a nice all silver series Pioneer system. In here I use both a Pioneer RT-909 and an RT-701 decks. I love the Pioneer decks. Built like tanks, great sound, and timeless looks. Though the sound is a tad lower than the Technics and Akai, they still are great daily drivers.

I also have a cute little Akai GX-77 deck. This was my first reel to reel I ever owned back when I was about 15 years old. I loved it then, and I love it now. It holds it's own quite well agains it's big brothers and most other decks as well.

365

In storage I have an Akai 1730-SS quad reel to reel. I bought mainly to play around with some quad recordings that I got off eBay. Trippy.....at best. Good and strong machine though. Sound is very decent too.
