View Full Version : What's wrong with my old gear you ask?

I have to say I love audio gear. As young as 8, I was listening to our little child suitcase record player. I loved the Snoopy Red Baron Christmas album. As I got into my teen years, I was given an all-in-one system. I got some headphones so I didn't have to have my parents come to my room every 30 minutes to tell me to turn it down:D
Now, as an adult I still listen too loud sometimes. I have an HT system that works good for movies and TV, but I really enjoy the hunt and sound of vintage audio gear.
The problem with the "Old" stuff is that it can be scratchy sounding, one channel may come and go, the "needle" on the record doesn't stay on the record, I have to turn up the volume on my receiver to hear the music from my turntable etc. The good thing about the gear from the 60's 70's and early 80's, is that it was built to last. Most gear will have a relatively easy fix, like cleaning, new bulbs which may require some soldering, new cartridges or stylus for that turntable and so on. If you have a question on your gear, place your question in this forum. We will do our best to help you or find you the info you need :)
Remember, don't throw out that old amp, chances are , its someones dream gear and if you don't want it, someone may.

I hear ya :) I have to say, they don't build them like they used to is an overused phrase, but it holds so true.

Whenever, I peer into my totally hand built model 7 pre, and see the lack of printed circuit boards, and all the point to point soldering, and the tone boards wrapped around the control knobs, it really is mind boggling that anyone could have made a profit with this sort of build quality. If ever you get a chance to look inside one, you owe it to yourself, but be warned.... You'll get the wants real bad!

And then this picture showing all three pieces just like I have. My amp is a year older with a solid aluminum bar accross the front that attaches with screws as opposed to the one pictured, made of plastic, that snaps into place. http://cgi.ebay.com/MARANTZ-Model-7T-PreAmplifier-Vintage-EXCELLENT-Cond_W0QQitemZ330372723015QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVinta ge_Electronics_R2?hash=item4cebbfb147

It's not real powerful, but it sure does look cool inside! Love those 1960s electronics for some stupid reason! Did you happen to see the pictures I put up on the marantz thread?
