As the reality of loosing my nad to obsolete parts i started looking at late 80's carver stereo receivers, does anyone know how they stack up against the nad 7175 that i currently have, or in general?

I have no affiliation with this seller, but I check him regularly because he only sells quality stuff and his S&H rates are extremely low for well packed electronics.

Every week he has lots of excellent 'vintage electronics' and my advice would be to forget about 'later than '70's stuff and consider a great amp with discrete output transistors and never look back.:)
This is a different world, and if you love stereo, you'll love this stuff......
my 2 cents:rolleyes:
take this next week and look at ebay, CL etc and see what is available in this generation of equipment and you will see why there is so many vintage advocates around!:D kindest regards, Chuck

Well the problem i have with that is i am not up on which receivers are the real mcoy and which ones are just ok,although i will agree that the look and feel of 70's stuff is unbeatable, the performance is not in my opinion, i had a few 70's pioneers, the controls felt great they looked really nice, but most of them could not even drive a 4 ohm speaker, after dealing with auto amps for years i learned it's all about current, good stuff drives low impedence loads, when i was given my nad 7175 back in the late 90's not one person that i knew was farmiliar with the power envelope design, after a few tests with friends speakers everyone of them were blown away at the brutal power, and fidelity of that sereies. The thought of getting even older equipment than i all ready have and can't get parts for is a scary idea.I remember some tests in audiophile mag if i remember right that talked about carver receivers as being very nad like both in output and low distortion,I do know one thing, the whole 5/7.1 thing is not for me, way to complicated, not consistant with music, and depends on silly powered sub thing that never sounds like it's a part of the soundstage,i am in love with super quality 2 channel receivers, one other possibility is a friend has a older mid 70's sanyo, he had said that it was their best at the time, it works fine and he's willing to let me have it, i might give it a try. I don't remember anyone ever bragging about any sanyo receiver that i remember.i will keep looking, thanks

....anyway, back to the question, I've had three Carvers that I dearly loved. But they were '80's and both the amps had 'mag amp technology' and that kept me worried for a few years and finally went for Marantz instead for a time...
Ends up there has been a lot of Carver probs, enough to make me think the switch was a good decision.
In fact if you type in Carver or NAD into the search on major forums the results usually are problematic.
The thing I like about vintage Japanese, it's built for the long haul:p. I also think it sounds better:D. Anyway, different stroke for different folks. Best of luck to you on whatever you choose. Chuck
