General Electric Portacolor II
television set model JA5302WD from the early 1970s. Unlike the rest of the Porta Color models, this set does not use vacuum tubes. This is one of
General Electric's first attempts to produce a solid-state small-screen
color TV. This Television has the instant warm-up 'feature' often found on
TV's in that era. This feature works by leaving the picture tube heater
filament powered on at reduced voltage, when the power switch is off. The
result is there's almost zero warm up time, you get a picture almost
immediately, though at some cost in
electricity. I would not recommend using this feature as it puts wear on
the set even though it's not running, also some known fires caused by
this back then. This feature was discontinued shortly after. If you are
a technician, you can bypass this feature, or the set can be unplug the when not in use. |
